If you browse Behance for design inspiration at all, chances are you've stumbled across this collection of helmet designs so literally — er, descriptively — titled Helmets Private Collection. The project is by BMD Design — the studio of French designer Bella Matribus Detestas.
Normally, I avoid posting about ubiquitous things, but these designs are ever-present for a reason — because they are beautiful! The intricacy, classic color palettes, hand-drawn quality, and distressed look of each design works well with its presenting element — a vintage racing helmet — to create a nostalgic feel reminiscent of biker culture and vintage racing.
The visible brush strokes, natural imperfections, and psychedelic-inspired hand-lettering of these designs perfectly expresses the look and feel of classic rebellion. With graphic design currently trending toward super-refined and flat, this time-worn look is also, ironically, refreshing.
On a personal note, I love the hand-drawn blackletter and resemblance to Pennsylvania German folk art evident in some of the designs.
