This Week's Loves

Be Brave

If we are brave enough often enough, we will fall; this is the physics of vulnerability.

DesignersMX

DesignersMX is a platform on which designers share curated playlists of music that inspires them along with matching cover art of their own creation.

So far, I've thoroughly enjoyed Work Equals Pay by Jacob Etter and Nostalgia by Dan Otis. ...and, check out the corresponding cover art, below. ...nice :).

A Comprehensive Reading List For and By Designers

InVision compiled the book recommendations of their favorite designers into A Comprehensive Reading List For and By Designers. With over 90 excellent titles, it certainly lives up to its name.

So far, I’ve read 3 from the list (The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst, Design is a Job by Mike Monteiro and The Visual Display of Quantitative Information by Edward Tufte) and either own or have had my eye on several of the others. I guess, I’d better get to reading ;).

Bellerby & Co. Globemakers

Thanks to their breathtaking Instagram feed, I’m dreaming of learning the art of globe-making and setting up shop in the ethereal studio of Bellerby & Co. Globemakers. They are one of the few remaining companies skilled in the trade of handcrafting custom-made globes and their work is quite exquisite — truly, as the video above explains, a labor of love.

Nike Home Run King Bat

This incredibly intricate baseball bat design was commissioned by Nike, created collaboratively by Kevin Cantrell Design and Juan Carlos Pagan, and laser-etched by Big Secret. It evokes the “spirit of baseball” with its reference to “old world typography” and its clever and playful employment of bases, baseballs, and helmets as typographic ornamentation.

Since just one photograph could never contain all the detail in this baby, be sure to check out the additional imagery on the portfolio of Kevin Cantrell Design. Ah, how I would love to see this in person...
