Welp, due, in part, to last night's marathon chicken fajita stuffed pepper cooking session, I'm a day late on this week's Lone Lyric post :/. Sorry about that, guys! Hopefully, I can make it up to you with the contemplative and centering vibe of this week's selection, Curiouser by Anchor + Bell. It was released this past June as part of Anchor + Bell's self titled EP.
The three line poem that makes us think for an entire week. The ubiquitous three word slogan that, somehow, acts as the perfect motivator for our daily workout routines. Oddly enough, it’s true that the ideas expressed using the least amount of words are, often, the most thought-provoking. Perhaps, this is because communicating in this fashion involves leaving out every word that’s unnecessary to convey the desired message — words that would, otherwise, offer only distraction. By doing so, this communication style centers us and encourages us to block out all thoughts except the ones related to the idea at hand.
Along with a deceptively simple progression of notes; a subtle, yet complex and sweetly beautiful, layered tone; and an introspective mood, Anchor + Bell employs this concept to deliver the message within the lyrics of Curiouser. Ironically, the message parallels the communication style used to deliver it by encouraging us to “bring [ourselves] to what [we] choose to [and] leave all else with ease.” Or, in other words, to dismiss unnecessary elements from our lives in order to focus solely on the pursuits that we deem personally meaningful — the ones about which we’re inexplicably curious, the ones without which a piece of ourselves would, surely, be lost.
The lyrics go on to warn that the unnecessary elements that we should omit from our lives only act as distractions ready to make us question our faith in our chosen pursuit. They prompt us to wonder if our favored quest is worth the chunk of precious time required to seek it. In turn, they cause us to contemplate whether this time would be better invested elsewhere — like, perhaps, in one of the infinite number of ventures tackled by others.
The ventures of others, though, are not the ones close to our hearts. They’re not the ones that keep us up at night, the ones that we, simply, must seek out. Therefore, even if we attempted them, they wouldn’t offer us fulfillment. They would only act as complications diffusing our attention from our true passions. Furthermore, if we tried to pursue even a fraction of the ventures with which we were presented, we would never accomplish anything with our limited time, let alone anything we consider personally meaningful.
So, on this Thursday, let’s immerse ourselves in the meditative atmosphere of Curiouser. Let’s heed its message and allow the notion of undertaking the same ventures as everyone else to, simply, fade away. Let’s discount the fear that the value we place in our chosen pursuits is misplaced and, finally, let’s stay passionate and curious about the endeavors that we find truly meaningful.
Softly follow come I'll show you, these three things I know.
You need not be sure, you only must be curiouser.
Curiouser and curiouser.
Long sought virtues, one eludes you,
Though you pray and seek,
Patience hidden in distraction lingers close to you.
Curiouser and curiouser.
Bring yourself to what you choose to,
Leave all else with ease.
